The Upper School Program

The Upper School program at RHNS is a Monday through Friday program, with a student to teacher ratio of 8:1. The hours of operation are 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. To be eligible for admission to our threes program, a child must celebrate his third birthday by December 31st. A typical day for our Upper Schoolers in both the three and four-year-old programs consists of the following activities:
  • Free choice of an activitiy upon entering in the morning. Children may opt to spend time on the computer, building with unit blocks or at the Duplo block table, enjoying quiet activities such as puzzles, manipulatives and painting, or dramatic play. It is a time for socialization, and interaction with teachers.

  • A table activity. The children come together in small groups or as a class to participate in an activity (art, cooking, science and/or nature activities, etc.) which reinforces a unit of study.

  • "Specials". Three days per week, the children have the opportunity to leave their classrooms for thirty minute periods, to receive instruction from music and art specialists. In the music program, the children come to appreciate different styles of music while becoming comfortable performing before an audience. In the art program, the children have an opportunity to work with different media as they draw, mold, paint and sculpt. In addition to these three scheduled special subjects per week, we are visitied throughout the year by specialists in the fields of art, science, nature, music and theater.

  • Language Arts. There is time in each day for coming together as a class to listen to a story, explore the calendar and chart the weather, enjoy sharing during show and tell and begin to appreciate poetry.

  • Recess. Each class has a scheduled thiry minutes of outdoor play every day.

  • A snack is provided mid-morning.
